PM Pays Official Visit and Meets with the Yogyakarta Sultan, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X

Yogyakarta, December 9, 2025 (Média Democracia) – The Prime Minister (PM) made an official visit to meet with the Sultan of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, at his office in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Indonesia, on Monday (08/12/2025). This visit was accessed by Média Democracia through the PM’s official page on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister conducted this official visit while attending a bilateral agenda focused on the second round of negotiations on the maritime boundary between Timor-Leste and Indonesia.

“It is a privilege for me. This is my first visit to Yogyakarta, and what truly impressed me was learning about the history of Yogyakarta after meeting with the Sultan. Before this, I only knew Yogyakarta from what I had heard, I really wanted to visit Borobudur, which is close to Yogyakarta, but I was unaware of the unique differences between Yogyakarta and other Indonesian provinces,” said Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.

The Prime Minister added that he felt honored to meet the Sultan, exchange views, and better understand the unique features of Indonesia, which consists of many islands.

Meanwhile, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X expressed his appreciation for the Prime Minister’s visit to Yogyakarta.

“We discussed a little about Yogyakarta’s history. It is true that we must reflect together to improve our nations. I hope this visit will further strengthen our relations, especially since many Timorese students study in Yogyakarta,” said Sultan Hamengkubuwono X.

The Prime Minister was accompanied during the visit by Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Roberto Soares, and Indonesia’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Octo Dorinus Manik.

Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X was born on 2 April 1946 with the name Bendara Raden Mas Herdjuno Darpito as the 10th Sultan of Yogyakarta. He has ruled the Sultanate of Hadiningrat since 1989 and has also served as the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta since 3 October 1998 until today. Herdjuno Darpito was born into the Yogyakarta Palace nobility with the title Bendara Raden Mas (BRM), traditionally bestowed upon direct descendants of current or former rulers.

He is the eldest son of Hamengkubuwana IX and his second wife, Kanjeng Raden Ayu (KRAy) Windyaningrum, whom he married in 1943.

According to palace regulations, his position as the eldest son makes Herdjuno the primary traditional candidate for succession within his lineage.
