The 9th Government Launches the Construction of the National Library to Invest in the Future of Education

Dili, July 7, 2026 (Media Democracia) – The 9th Constitutional Government has officially launched the construction of the National Library. This project is an investment in the future of Timor-Leste, to provide a learning space for students.

Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, considers the construction of the National Library as an investment in Timor-Leste’s future. It will preserve national memory, strengthen education and research, and pass on the nation’s history and culture to future generations.

Today is an important moment, not only the launch of a new construction, but also an investment that will preserve our national memory, support education and research, and provide future generations with access to the knowledge and history of our country.” said the Vice PM after delivering a speech at the launch of the National Library in Bairo Pite, Monday (06/07).

He stated that the National Library has significant meaning for Timor-Leste, a young nation that gained independence through the long struggle of its people. And the people of Timor-Leste fought for independence not only to build a sovereign nation, but also to protect their identity, language, culture, and national memory.

The National Library will carry out a vital role in fulfilling this responsibility. The National Library will preserve the country’s documentary heritage and provide space for students, researchers, teachers, writers, and the general public to learn, conduct research, and discover new knowledge. And the library will help preserve the history of the national struggle, our rich culture, and the various ideas that have shaped the life of the Timorese people.” he said.

He also emphasized that national development is not only about building roads, bridges, ports, and various public infrastructure. But national development also requires investment in education, culture, knowledge, and national memory.

Strong institutions help us understand our history, strengthen our identity, and prepare for the future. That is why the national library is a very important project for our country. The launch of the construction of the national library is the result of a long planning process, technical preparation, and collaboration between various institutions. This partnership has shown how investment in the petroleum sector can also contribute to the long-term development of our country.” Kalbuadi Lay added.

He affirmed that the National Library is expected to encourage a culture of reading, creativity, and innovation, while ensuring that the knowledge and traditions of the Timorese people are protected and passed on to future generations.
