Timor-Leste Government Will Celebrate National Ocean Day, Which Will Fall on June 5, 2026

Dili, 03 June 2026 (Media Democracia) – The Vice Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment, IX Constitutional Government, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect and sustainably manage marine resources in Timor-Leste.

According to Vice Prime Minister Francisco Kalbuadi Lay in his communiqué celebrating National Ocean Day, which will fall on June 5, 2026, he stated that the ocean is a national heritage, a source of life, and an important element of the cultural identity of the Timorese people and future generations.

National Ocean Day reminds us all of our shared responsibility to protect our ocean, promote sustainable fishing practices, and ensure the conservation of marine ecosystems so they can sustain life and development for our nation.” stated the Vice Prime Minister in the communiqué released at CCD on June 2, 2026.

The Vice Prime Minister explained that they will continue implementing the Action Plan Policy for the Promotion of a Resilient and Sustainable Blue Economy. To implement this, the government will combat ocean pollution and sustainably manage resources from the sea and in coastal areas.

For this year’s celebration, the government will carry out various activities including environmental awareness campaigns, ocean cleanup activities, and educational programs for youth. These initiatives promote a sustainable blue economy led by the Prime Minister and the Office of Land and Maritime Borders, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Ministry of Education and Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Transport and Communications, PNTL, Tourism and Environment, SECOMS. Activities will be held in Dili Municipality, Lautém, Atauro Administrative Post, and other municipalities.” he said.

Vice Prime Minister also called on all citizens to actively participate in National Ocean Day, which will fall on June 5, 2026.

Therefore, we call for active participation from all citizens to protect the marine environment. The conservation of our SEAS and OCEANS is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation between the Government, private sector, communities, and international partners. We also recognize the contributions of local communities, civil society organizations, development partners, and public institutions that have greatly contributed to the preservation of Timor-Leste’s seas.” he emphasized.

The communiqué serves as a call to everyone to value and protect the ocean, as it is a heritage that sustains Timor-Leste’s life for many years to come.
