Government Launches Verify.gov.tl,to Strengthen Security and Prevent Driving License Forgery

Dili, 03 June 2026 (Media Democracia) – Government officially launches the Verify.gov.tl platform as a digital verification system to strengthen the security of public documents. This platform was created to prevent driving license forgery and to help relevant entities verify document authenticity quickly and transparently.

According to Minister of Transport and Communications Miguel Manetelu, the launch of this platform is to ensure document originality and prevent document falsification.

This platform was developed based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Timor-Leste and Cambodia on January 20, 2025, and will be implemented for the driving license verification system to ensure document originality and prevent forgery. The technical team came to present to our Land Transport Directorate to first apply Verify to driving licenses. Starting in March 2025, the technicians began this work and nearly completed it in November, but it could not be launched then. Today we finally have the opportunity to launch it, because although the plan came from 2025, we improved it and only now are launching the platform named verify.gov.tl.” Minister of Transport and Communications Miguel Manetelu told in the GMN Multipurpose Hall, Bebora, Dili (01/06/2026).

In addition, the Minister of Transport and Communications affirmed that the Government will also replace all manual driving licenses with new driving licenses featuring QR codes, and this system will be supported by the National Directorate of Land Transport (DNTT).

The Verify.gov.tl platform will integrate QR Codes into driving licenses to facilitate the verification process and increase the security of official documents. The Government also plans to replace all manual driving licenses with new licenses with QR Codes, for both provisional and permanent licenses. This new system will help the National Directorate of Land Transport (DNTT) exercise better control, including measures against people who commit serious traffic violations, through a modern and efficient verification mechanism. That’s why some of them already have driving licenses with QR codes for testing, and going forward we will announce to the public so that all manual driving licenses will be replaced.” the Minister affirmed.

On the other hand, Cambodia’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Chea Vandeth, said the Verify platform will be developed jointly with technical teams from Timor-Leste and Cambodia with support from technology experts.

The Verify.gov.tl platform was developed jointly by technical teams from Timor-Leste and Cambodia with support from technology experts. This platform doesn’t store user data, because all information remains with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and access to data will require a verification process first to ensure user security and privacy.” said the Cambodian Minister.

The Government launched the digital platform Verify.gov.tl with the objective of strengthening public document security and preventing driving license forgery. The platform allows relevant entities to verify the authenticity of driving licenses quickly and transparently, thereby reducing the risk of fake document use in Timor-Leste.
